Leucoplasts are a type of plastid found in plant cells. Plastids are specialized organelles that are involved in various cellular processes, including photosynthesis, storage of food and pigments, and synthesis of fatty acids and amino acids. Leucoplasts are specifically known for their role in storing starches, oils, and proteins within plant cells. The prefix "leuco-" means "white" in Greek, and these organelles are generally colorless or pale in appearance under a microscope. Their lack of pigmentation distinguishes them from chloroplasts, which contain the green pigment chlorophyll.
