Mitochondria are double-membrane-bound organelles found in the cells of most eukaryotic organisms. Often referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cell, mitochondria are responsible for producing the energy currency of the cell, known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), through a process called cellular respiration. Additionally, mitochondria play essential roles in other cellular processes, including metabolism, signaling, and cell death.
